This is the 1st VR simulation for canine laparoscopic ovariectomy, available on the LAP Mentor Express. The goals is to gain clinical proficiency for left and right ovary resection: identify, elevate and mobilize the uterine horn, and resect the ovary, while avoiding damage to tissues and managing bleedings and complications.
It was developed in collaboration with The Greater Stockholm Veterinary Care Foundation in Sweden, who also funded the collaboration project. Associate professor Odd Höglund, DVM, PhD, FAcadTM, has been the foundation’s expert consultant in veterinary surgery.
This curricula on the LAP Mentor Express combines canine-specific didactic material with hands-on clinical exercises appropriate for veterinary surgeons. The curriculum is intended as a comprehensive guide to prepare veterinary surgeons for live procedures.
It was developed in collaboration with Boel A. Fransson, DVM, DACVS, ACVS, Founding Fellow MIS. Contribution by Eric Monnet, DVM, DACVS, DECVS, ACVS, Founding Fellow MIS.
“We haven’t had this sort of technology — it’s a game changer,” Fransson said. “The beauty with these systems is they give you an opportunity to make mistakes, and you will make mistakes when you first learn, but we don’t want those mistakes to happen with a live animal.”
